14.34 Operator qualifications

(1) A crane or hoist must only be operated by a qualified person who has been instructed to operate the equipment.

(2) A person must demonstrate competency, including familiarity with the operating instructions for the crane or hoist and the code of signals for hoisting operations authorized by the Board before operating the equipment.

Work BC also requires a site specific competency test for tower cranes.

Assessment Requirements: Every Employer must have  a competency test done on every operator before they are allowed to operate any crane.  Site Specific Assessments are also required for Self Erect Tower Cranes for every new job site.

Written Assessment: Grade the written test portion based on the accuracy and completeness of the answers, ensuring a clear understanding of the material.

 Practical Evaluation: Assess the operator’s performance in real or simulated tasks, focusing on their ability to apply knowledge practically and follow standard operating procedures.

Observation and Feedback: Conduct observational evaluations during routine operations, providing immediate feedback and noting areas of strength and those needing improvement.

Knowledge Gaps Identification: Use the results to identify specific knowledge gaps, ensuring that these areas are addressed
